“Drinking, in every culture, is a rule-governed activity, hedged about with prescriptions and norms concerning who may drink how much of what, when, where, with whom, in what manner and with what effects.”

Whether water, beer or lemonade, whether milk, tea or coffee: drinks are not only vital, but their consumption also says something about social developments.

The oldest alcoholic beverage is beer, which was brewed around 13,000 years ago in the Near East. Wine was made around 4000 BC. Cultivated and drunk in ancient Egypt.

The earliest known traditions date back to at least the time of the Sumerers. However, we now have indications that China’s fermented wine-like drink which are made from rice, honey and different types of fruit were made around 9,000 years ago. The high percentage alcohols that are needed to create these drinks have only been around for about a thousand years.

For a long time one had quenched one’s thirst with beer. Water was not a real alternative in the Middle Ages, as it was often dirty and contaminated and could therefore make people ill. The people of the Middle Ages knew that too. However, brewing beer killed pathogens that were in the water. In the end, the resulting concoction probably wasn’t too tasty. On the other hand, it was nutritious, invigorating and much less harmful to health than well or spring water.

Pina Colada Recipe for one drink:

• 6cl white rum
• 10 cl pineapple juice
• 4 cl thick coconut cream (Cream of Coconut)
• 2 cl whipped cream
• 3-4 ice cubes
• 1 pineapple slice, 2 leaves and 1 cocktail cherry to decorate

STRAWBERRY COLADA

Ingredients for 1 glass each:

6cl white rum

10 cl pineapple juice

2 cl lemon juice

6 cl strawberry syrup

4 cl coconut syrup

Strawberries for decoration

Preparation:

Pour all ingredients into a cocktail shaker and mix thoroughly. Then pour the cocktail into a large glass filled with ice cubes. Finally, serve with a reusable drinking straw.

For decoration, first wash the strawberries and remove the green. Then slice the berries. To place them on the edge of the glass, cut one berry in the middle of each glass.

Lemon Splash

Ingredients for 2 small glasses:

4cl limoncello

10cl Prosecco

30cl bitter lemon

Preparation:

First, fill a glass with a few ice cubes. Then pour in the limoncello, pour in Prosecco and bitter lemon and stir once. Then garnish with lemon or lime slices and serve.

PINK PALOMA

Ingredients for 1 glass:

6cl tequila

2 cl lime juice

1 large pinch of salt

Grapefruit lemonade for pouring

Preparation:

First pour the tequila into the glass and stir in the lime juice and salt. Finally, put ice cubes in the glass and top up with the grapefruit lemonade.

Long Island Ice Tea

Ingredients for 4 servings:

8 cl of rum

8 cl vodka

8cl tequila

8 cl orange liqueur

8 cl lime juice

8 sugar syrup

1 liter of coke

Preparation:

1. Put all the ingredients except the Coca-Cola in a cocktail shaker with about 3-5 ice cubes and shake vigorously. To do this, hold the cocktail shaker with both hands between the body and the lid so that the shaker does not open when mixing.

2. Strain the Long Island Ice Tea through a sieve into 4 long drink glasses and fill up with cola.

Bloody Mary

Ingredients for 1 serving:

10 cl tomato juice

5 cl vodka

1 dash Tabasco

1 dash of Worcestershire sauce

ice cubes

salt, coarse pepper, coarse

Preparation:

1. Pour the tomato juice, vodka, Tabasco and Worcestershire sauce into the cocktail shaker with a few ice cubes. Hold the cocktail shaker between the body and the lid with both hands and shake well.

2. Pour the cocktail into a highball glass filled with ice.

3. Wash the vegetables for the decoration. Cut the celery into sticks and place them on the edge of the glass.

Grasshopper-Cocktail

Ingredients for 4 servings:

16 cl cream

12cl crème de cacao

12cl crème de menthe

1 handful of ice cubes

mint leafs

4 cocktail glasses, pre-chilled

Preparation:

Put all the ingredients and the ice cubes in a shaker and shake vigorously for 20-30 seconds. Strain the drink through a strainer into a chilled cocktail glass. Serve garnished with a mint leaf.

Do it yourself: liqueur

1 kg berries ( you choose)

1 vanilla stick

1 bottle of clear liquor ( at least 38%)

1 package of rock candy

preparation:

fill all the berries and all the named ingredients in a big jar and let it sit.

monkey tail

ingredients

1 vanilla bean

4 cloves

2 sticks of cinnamon

2 l milk (3.5%)

2 cups of coffee (mocha strong!)

0.5 l vodka

sugar at will

nutmeg

preparation

1. first mix the milk, sugar and spices (but not the nutmeg) and bring to a boil. then let the whole mixture cool down. now add mocha, stir and let stand for a while (about 5 minutes).

2. next add vodka and the grated nutmeg. Finally, strain the mixture and fill into bottles.

3. store in a cool and dry place.

homemade eggnog

ingredients

• Large eggs – Buy pasteurized eggs for an extra measure of food safety.
• Granulated sugar
• Fine sea salt
• Whole milk – I don’t recommend substituting this ingredient since whole milk will give you the creamiest eggnog. We call this “homogenized milk” in Canada.
• Heavy whipping cream – This addition makes the eggnog even more creamy and yummy.
• Ground cinnamon – Use this ingredient in the drink itself and then add some extra for garnish.
• Ground nutmeg
• Pure vanilla extract – You can use artificial vanilla extract if that is what you have in your pantry.

Try this creamy and smooth old-fashioned holiday drink this Christmas. This classic homemade eggnog recipe has both spice and sweetness and is easy to make on the stovetop.

When I think of Christmas drinks, the first one that comes to mind is eggnog! I’ve been a fan for as long as I can remember. Even as a picky child, eggnog was always one of my favorite holiday drinks.

Around Christmas, the stores sell out of eggnog so instead of doing without, I make my own homemade eggnog. It’s actually quite easy and tastes even better, in my opinion.

How to Make Homemade Eggnog

Step One: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, and sea salt until combined. Set aside.

Step Two: In a large saucepan, combine the whole milk, cream, cinnamon and nutmeg. Heat over medium-low heat, whisking often, until it begins to steam, about 10 to 15 minutes.

Step Three: Add 1/4 cup of the warm milk mixture to the egg mixture and whisk well. Add in another 1/4 cup of the milk mixture and whisk again. Repeat twice more so you’ve added a total of 1 cup of the milk mixture to the egg mixture.

Step Four: Pour the egg mixture into the saucepan with the rest of the milk mixture and continue to heat and whisk almost constantly until the mixture begins to thicken and reaches 160F, about 15 minutes.

Step Five: Remove from heat and whisk in the vanilla extract. Strain the mixture into a jar or other container with a cover. Allow to chill completely in the fridge.

Step Six: Stir well before serving and top with a sprinkle of cinnamon if desired.

200ml williams christ liquor / gin

300 ml cream

300 ml yoghurt (vanilla flavor)

300 ml woodruff syrup

optional ice cubes

Simply mix all the ingredients together, fill into bottles and refrigerate until ready to serve. Enjoy!

Classic mulled wine recipe

1 bottle of dry organic red wine (e.g. Pinot Noir)

1 sliced organic orange

2 sticks Ceylon cinnamon

3 cloves

2-3 tablespoons sugar, honey or agave syrup

a few capsules of cardamom to taste

optional: vanilla bean

For our first mulled wine recipe, heat the red wine in a large saucepan over medium heat. Attention: When making it yourself, make sure that the red wine never boils, otherwise the alcohol will evaporate. Add the remaining ingredients while heating. Then take the pot off the stove and let the whole thing and all the ingredients simmer for about an hour. Before serving, reheat the drink (don’t let it boil!) and strain through a strainer into mugs or a thermos, so all the spices are caught.

Hot Granny

ingredients

•1L milk

•1 packet of vanilla sugar

•200 ml eggnog

•3 tbsp cocoa powder

preparation

1. First, heat the milk (but do not boil)

2. add the eggnog and cocoa powder

3. mix and drink immediately while hot.

An icing on top, that’s how it tastes best. (Vanilla sugar of your choice, also possibly vary the amount of eggnog).

Hot aperitif

ingredients

•150ml Aperol

•30ml passion fruit syrup or mango

•cream

•250ml white wine

•150 ml apple juice

preparation

First just heat all the ingredients except cream in a saucepan, but don’t let it boil.

Finally fill-up in glasses. Finally add the cream and enjoy!
